Men's Chaps
You’ve seen them before: sturdy motorcyclists in black leather. They have a certain swagger, an air of confidence, their own brand of machismo that you just don’t find among other men. When they enter a room women pay attention, and other men seem to get a little smaller. They wear heavy leather jackets, durable boots, and quite often they wear motorcycle chaps for men. Somehow it’s the chaps that make the most powerful statement: They remind us of the cowboys of the wild west of long ago.

The earliest form of chaps for men came from Spaniards who settled in Mexico in the early 19th century. They were originally called armas (think "armor”), which meant "shields”, and their purpose was to protect riders’ legs from thick underbrush on the prairies. They were comprised of two large, thick slabs of leather that extended from the upper thigh to below the knee. The leather came from cows, goats, buffalo, deer, or other large animals whose skins were large enough to do the job. Eventually they came to be known as chaparejos, which was a Mexican Spanish word that means protection from chaparral.
By the latter part of the 19th century American cowboys had adopted this form of leg protection and shortened the name to "chaps”. Several different styles of chaps for men evolved, including shotgun chaps, which were long and straight; batwing chaps, which flared at the bottom; chinks, which were half-length chaps; and woolies, which were made with fleece from angora to keep riders’ legs warm in the chilly Rocky Mountains.
It was only natural that motorcyclists would adopt chaps as their own. As men made the transition from horses to motorcycles, they needed a form of protection from the elements as they rode through the cold and inclement weather. Heavy leather chaps for men protect a rider’s legs and clothing from road debris, moisture, and flying insects, and are especially helpful in the event of an accident, protecting a rider’s legs against asphalt abrasion.
Finding motorcycle chaps for men that fit comfortably is of utmost importance. Most chaps for men buckle at the waist, much like a belt, and have zippered legs with button snaps near the ankle and foot. They must fit loosely enough to allow underclothes, but be snug enough to prevent them from flapping too much in the wind at high speeds.
Chaps for men have a long and interesting history, from the early Spanish vaqueros to the cowboys of the American west, and finally to today’s motorcyclists. Not only do they evoke a feeling of strength and machismo, they offer practical protection against cold, moisture, debris and road rash.
